Tennyson Down

147m

Tennyson Down is a HuMP, 147m high, in the Isle Of Wight National Landscape. The HuMPs are hills in Britain and Ireland with at least 100 metres of prominence, whatever their height.

Lymington Pier is the nearest station, 6.4 mi (about 8.5 to 9 mi on foot), which makes it a long walk-in by any route. Plan it as a long day or an overnight trip. From Lymington Pier it's about 3 to 3.5 hours to the summit. Lymington Town is next, 6.5 mi (about 8.5 to 9.5 mi on foot), and 5 stations are within 10 miles in all.

Tennyson Down is a hill at the west end of the Isle of Wight just south of Totland. Tennyson Down is a grassy, whale-backed ridge of chalk which rises to 482 ft/147m above sea level. Tennyson Down is named after the poet Lord Tennyson who lived at nearby Farringford House for nearly 40 years. The poet used to walk on the down almost every day, saying that the air was worth 'sixpence a pint'.
