Benarty Hill

356mM Marilyn

Benarty Hill is a Marilyn, 356m high, and also counts as a HuMP. The Marilyns are hills anywhere in Britain and Ireland with at least 150 metres of prominence, whatever their height.

Lochgelly is the nearest station, 2.9 mi (about 4 mi on foot), so the summit is within walking distance of the train. From Lochgelly it's about 1.5 to 2 hours to the summit, 1 in 17 on average. Cowdenbeath is next, 3.8 mi (about 5 to 5.5 mi on foot), and 14 stations are within 10 miles in all.

Benarty Hill, locally simply Benarty, rises above and to the west of Ballingry, in the west of Fife, Scotland. The summit ridge, known as Mulla Craig, forms the boundary with Perth and Kinross. It is a prominent feature of the view from the M90 motorway, and from Kinross and Loch Leven. The lower slopes are steep on all sides, but the extensive heath around the summit is relatively flat. The name Benarty may come from Pictish meaning "stony mountain" or Gaelic meaning either "mountain where there are bears" or possibly "at the high hill".
